Seeking To Start A Business Health Insurance Program?
Published by Manny on Tagged Health Insurance
The bulk of health insurance administration in the US is conducted by privately-owned third party businesses, known as HMOs and PPOs. Health insurance plans are usually bought thru a business health insurance program- where businesses allow their employees to purchase insurance by putting aside part of their weekly or monthly earnings.
Because health insurance companies are usually reluctant to insure individuals, business health insurance is pervasive; This means that they have to purchase it through a business. Partly because it takes more time to negotiate individual contracts, but it is also due to the idea that those who are more likely to be in need of health insurance are also more likely to seek them out. Which, in turn, leads to augmented costs and failures in statistical models. Meaning if the insurance company sells a plan to a firm, it knows the average makeup of the firm in terms of demographics, which makes estimating the total cost of coverage more reliable.
If you’ve quit your job recently or you are self-employed, this probably won’t make you feel any better; but there is some good news:
The US Congress passed the COBRA act, giving benefits to people who are self-employed. One of which is to continue their former business health insurance plan with their insurance company.
If you are in search of starting a business insurance program for your own employees, it would do you good to seek out an HMO or PPO to get some insurance quotes. They may grill you for estimates, demographic info, etc. But if you work with a number of companies at the same time, you should be able to bargain at a reasonable price.
